Job Description:

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Ryerson Students’ Union is currently seeking candidates for the position of International Students Advocacy Coordinator, overseeing the student union’s advocacy and outreach efforts for its international student membership. This is a full-time, permanent, English-speaking position based in Toronto, Canada. 

The Coordinator is directly supervised by the President and will work closely with the Vice President of Education.

 

Job Requirements:

 

SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS:

  • Completed degree or diploma is preferred and high school completion is required.
  • Two or more years of experience assisting and working with international students preferably at a post-secondary institution or the not-for-profit sector 
  • Excellent crisis intervention, prevention and de-escalation skills, conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to make quick decisions, ability to solve problems is required.
  • Experience and knowledge of international student immigration-related issues.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced demanding environment; 
  • A holistic understanding of the struggles that an international student faces;
  • Capable of working in a team environment; 
  • Student leadership experience (preferably at Ryerson) 
  • Experience applying for government grants; 
  • Excellent computer skills, including Google Drive Suite. Excellent customer service skills, working with diverse and marginalized communities from an anti-racist / anti-oppressive framework

Job Duties:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts seminars and workshops on pathways to citizenships in Canada, in part by inviting licensed immigration practitioners to speak to points of general information; - Identifies and acts on opportunities for cooperation with RSU and Equity Service Centres on relevant campaigns;
  • Provides support to students with their academics, course enrolments and academically guiding students particularly entering their first year; 
  • Coordinates and assists with operations and activities, including but not limited to volunteer management, equipment, systems analysis, event coordination, campaign development and fundraising; 
  • Assists international students with immigration-related inquiries by matching students with licensed practitioners such as lawyers, Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants, or Regulated International Student Immigration Advisors who may answer their concerns; 
  • Develops and creates strategies to assist international students in settling at Ryerson (rental housing, financial management, resources available to use on and off-campus, assistance with part-time job search etc.); 
  • Supervises all volunteers working with the position, required to administer human resource application forms, timesheets and training; 
  • Ensures adequate record-keeping is maintained, updating and compiling intake forms. - Ensures that all student record and information is kept confidential; 
  • Provides regular updates on activities and level of participation to the management - Recommends and initiates special projects related to the international students and campaigns for the Students’ Union to run; 
  • As time permits, assists with other duties as assigned.
